Friday Newsletter time: Another win for Double A Frisco, this time with their Cousin Eddie jerseys
It's Christmas in July on Friday night at Riders Field, where the RoughRiders will be donning some real nice uniforms.
Promotions like the one Friday night at Riders Field are what make minor-league baseball so great.
The Frisco RoughRiders, the Texas Rangers’ Double A affiliate owned by Chuck Greenberg and headed by president and general manager Victor Rojas, is hosting Christmas in July.
The hook, though, is the Christmas Vacation-themed jerseys RoughRiders players will wear in their 7:05 p.m. game against Springfield.
The jerseys are a tribute to the Cousin Eddie bathrobe, which the lovable character famously donned as he emptied the, uh, plumbing of his RV into the sewer in front of the Griswolds’ house.
Hey, it was full.
The first 750 fans will receive replica T-shirts of the jerseys, designed by Frisco marketing manager Krystin King. She’s the designer behind all of the specialty jerseys Frisco wears.
Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will be making an appearance as well. They might want to cool down with a bat beer, 24 ounces of goodness served in a replica baseball bat.
Aren’t the minor leagues great?
Hmmmmm … chicken strip sub sandwich
Rangers catcher Johan Heim is from Buffalo, N.Y., which is where the Rangers are resuming their season this weekend against the still-banned-from-Canada Toronto Blue Jays.
He spent his All-Star break there, conveniently, and his return is big news to the Buffalo media. Heim was the guest Thursday afternoon on the Rangers’ Zoom channel, and he broke down his favorite spots for the Texas scribes.
His No. 1 go-to spot is Jim’s Steakout, a hoagie shop, and he and his wife order the chicken finger sub. Yes!
“We go mild,” Heim said. “We go mild chicken fingers with some lettuce, tomato and mayo. We can’t even find them anywhere else other than Buffalo. That’s why it’s so good.”
Heim said that the best buffalo wings in Buffalo are served up at Duff’s Famous Wings. Luckily for him, there is a Duff’s franchise in Southlake — the only non-New York location in the U.S.
Card of the week
I think I called this “card of the day” last week, but this isn’t going to be a daily feature unless the public demands it. So, let’s tone it down to “card of the week.”
This one, again from my personal collection, is a favorite because of who it is. It’s a 1982 Topps Traded No. T124 Ron Washington rookie card.
The only value is sentimental. This card can be had for a buck on eBay. He was the first Rangers manager I covered, and any conversation with him since then is the highlight of my day.
Washington is the Atlanta Braves’ third-base coach and infield instructor at age 69. He helps the Do It For Durrett Foundation acquire auction items. He’s still popular with Rangers fans.
This is one a keeper.
FYI: There is a another Dallas Card Show mega show this weekend at the Delta Marriott Watters Creek Convention Center in Allen. Find all the details here. Stop by the Superior Sports Investments tables and see what Bill and Sam Sliheet have cooking. They’re always in buy mode if you have something that might interest them.
Doggy video!
Do whatever you can to stay hydrated. Enjoy. See you Monday.
