The Rangers drafted Jose Trevino in 2014 and he debuted with them in 2018. They traded him Saturday to the Yankees (The Associated Press/Ross D. Franklin).

SURPRISE, Ariz. — The Texas Rangers didn’t want to send Jose Trevino to the minor leagues, but that was bound to happen unless they could find a trade for their Opening Day catcher last season.

They found one Saturday.

Trevino was sent to the New York Yankees for right-handed reliever Albert Abreu and minor-league starter Robby Ahlstrom. Abreu will be in the Rangers bullpen for the season opener Friday at Toronto.

The deal clears the log jam the Rangers had at catcher since acquiring Mitch Garver and puts Jonah Heim on the roster as the backup. Two other players were told they have made the team.
