The future at third base for the Texas Rangers is on hold, again.

Josh Jung, the team’s No. 2 overall prospect and top-ranked position player in the minor leagues, underwent surgery Wednesday morning to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder and will miss at least six months.

He was injured earlier this month while lifting weights. The surgery was performed in Arlington by team physician Dr. Keith Meister.

Jung was expected to make his MLB debut this season, possibly to open the season. If he returns in August, he would do so at designated hitter and almost certainly in the minor leagues.

The Rangers haven’t ruled out Jung potentially getting some MLB at-bats toward the end of the season, but much would have to go right.
