TORONTO — As the joke has gone all offseason, the 2022 Texas Rangers are going to be better than a season ago because they can’t possibly be any worse.

The Rangers went 60-102 in 2021. The surprising thing is there were two MLB teams that actually had worse records.

But Baltimore and Arizona, both 52-110, didn’t take the same offseason strides forward that the Rangers did.

Corey Seager and Marcus Semien were added for $500 million. Jon Gray signed for $56 million. The Rangers spent another $19.2 million on Kole Calhoun, Brad Miller and Martin Perez, and added former All-Star Mitch Garver via trade.

That group can’t do it all. The players who endured one of the worst seasons in team history must get better.

If not, they will be seeking employment elsewhere.

Yet, hope springs eternal today, Opening Day, and the Rangers believe anything can happen over 162 games.

The offseason spree also bought some optimism.

But how much improvement can the Rangers realistically make? At the very least, the Rangers know they are better and their expectation is they can win.
