The Sunday Read: After 102 losses, Texas Rangers still want to 'build this the right way.' In other words, there's no quick fix ahead
The pledge to spend money this offseason and the promise of the farm system come with no guarantees.
The 2021 MLB regular season ended a week ago, with the Texas Rangers dropping their 102nd game in fitting fashion with a listless 6-0 loss.
They officially moved toward 2022 on Tuesday, dismissing hitting coach Luis Ortiz and bench coach Don Wakamatsu. On Saturday, outfielder Jason Martin and right-handers Mike Foltynewicz and Hunter Wood elected to take free agency after clearing outright waivers.
More roster moves are coming as the Rangers open spots on the 40-man roster ahead of free agency, add players on the 60-day injured list and protect prospects from the Rule 5 draft.
Rangers scouts, coaches and executives will meet next week to finalize the team’s offseason plan.
They already have an idea of what they will do. A 102-loss season helped mapped that out.
In a season that was geared to learning what they had, the Rangers discovered they didn’t have all that much.
