For those Metroplex sports fans who might not have seen it Wednesday, the Dallas Mavericks retired the No. 41 jersey number of Dirk Nowitzki.
He’s one of the best players in NBA history, a big man who could shoot from the outside and forever changed the game. A 14-time All-Star, Nowitzki is the sixth-leading scorer in NBA history (31,560) and No. 1 among foreign players.
Nowtizki’s jersey now hangs at the American Airlines Center along with Brad Davis (10), Rolando Blackman (22) and Derek Harper (12). The Mavs also retired Kobe Bryant’s number (24) after the legend was killed in a 2020 helicopter accident.
The Nowitzki retirement ceremony also kicked off a debate among friends of the Texas Rangers Newsletter on which Mavs player should be next.
Mark Aguirre, who wore No. 24, was the unanimous choice. Sorry, Uwe Blab.
The Texas Rangers have retired six jersey numbers — five of their own (Johnny Oates, 26; Nolan Ryan, 34; Ivan Rodriguez, 7; Michael Young, 10; and Adrian Beltre, 28) and the No. 42 of Jackie Robinson that was retired across baseball.
The Young and Beltre ceremonies both came in 2019 before the Rangers moved from Globe Life Park across the street to Globe Life Field. There isn’t an immediate need to retire another, as there was before leaving the ballpark where Young and Beltre played, but it’s not because of a lack of candidates.
But who should be next?
