If they wanted to, they could make it without veteran innings eaters. It would just take some planning and some creativity. It would be really easy with just one veteran innings eater, but it is doable without any. They just don't want to mess with the extra planning since they don't have much long term hope for those other starting pitchers anyway.

It’s doable but they would have to add some AAAA-type guys to preserve depth and not feel the need to rush prospects. The injuries to Cody and Palumbo hurt when it comes to staying in-house.

Trading away Hans Crouse for a relief pitcher who they are trying to shoehorn into the rotation didn't help either.

I think Howard was so messed up in Philly that it's hard to tell what he is. He'll get a chance to start.

When is Palumbo due back?

He should be ready for ST (back), but he barely pitched in 2020. He's not going to be able to throw a ton of innings.

Realistically, how many additional innings can the young guys be expected to pitch next year compared to their innings this year? 25 to 30?

It's case-by-case basis. The few guys who cleared 100 innings can probably add 30-40. Others will in the 20 range. I would make an exception for Winn, who had around 85 innings. It seems like he could take a jump.

So the following is possible then?

Dunning   155

Allard       145

Hearn       130

Otto           140

Alexy         120

Latz           125

Burke         110

Winn           120

Henriquez  125

Rodriguez  110

Palumbo.       75

But how many of those guys are ready to log those innings in the majors and how many of them do you actually want throwing that many innings in the majors? What does 145 innings of Allard look like?

That is where it would take some planning. Ot would involve baying some guys for a few weeks at a time in the minors.

Most of those guys have thrown in the majors already. It would probably look a lot like thiis year would have looked like had Lyles gone down in May for the rest of the season. Only next year there are some more guys who can step in later in the year, due to another year of development.

If Allard threw all 145 innings up here would it be any worse that what we got from Folty or a lot of pitchers they would be able to get on a short term deal to eat innings?

There is also Arihara to use at some point when someone needs to be shut down.

This is all if the goal is to get a good look at some guys before we start trying to contend. If the rebuilding is completely over then we would really need more than simply innings eaters.

We would need to sign good pitchers to longer contracts.
